Valuing Ecosystem Services as Productive Inputs by Edward B Barbier — last modified 22-01-2007 15:14
Discusses latest advances in valuing ecosystem services that support or protect economic activity, using the example of coastal wetlands. The two services discused in detail are the role of coastal wetlands as breeding grounds and fry nurseries for marine fisheries and protecting coastlines and economic activity from storm damages. The paper illustrates the methodology for mangroves in Thailand from 1979-2004, estimating the effects of mangrove deforestation in terms of loss of fishery values and increased expected storm damages.
